The honest differences
| Marketplace (ACA) | Private plans | |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Anyone, especially households that qualify for a tax credit or have ongoing health conditions | Healthy households, the self-employed, and anyone above the tax-credit income limit |
| Pre-existing conditions | Always covered; no health questions | Health questions on the application; a condition can raise the price or be excluded |
| Tax credit | Yes, if household income is between 100% and 400% of the poverty level | No |
| When you can enroll | Open Enrollment (Nov 1 to mid-January in most states) or a qualifying life event | Any time of year |
| Doctors and hospitals | Mostly HMO and EPO networks tied to your area; some PPOs | Typically PPO-style networks that travel with you |
| Deductibles | Often $5,000 to $10,000 on the cheapest tiers, lower on Silver with a tax credit | Typically lower, chosen when you apply |
We do not collect your details in this case. Marketplace enrollment is free, and the tax credit is applied by the Marketplace itself.

Questions people ask
Is this HealthCare.gov?
No. Browse Health Plans is an independent comparison site operated by Smart Health Match LLC. Marketplace plans and premium tax credits are also available directly at HealthCare.gov or your state's marketplace. We show you both sides so you can decide.
Where do the Marketplace prices come from?
From the official plan-year 2026 Qualified Health Plan landscape file published by CMS on data.healthcare.gov (snapshot August 4, 2026). Prices are age-rated the same way the marketplace does it. States that run their own marketplace are shown as a statewide estimate until you talk to an advisor.
Where do the private plan prices come from?
From the carrier rate tables our advisors quote from, by state, age and sex. Private plans are not ACA plans: they ask health questions, can decline or exclude conditions, and are usually the better deal for healthy households who do not qualify for a tax credit.
What is the tax credit, and why does income matter?
The Marketplace premium tax credit lowers your monthly premium when household income is between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level. The larger credits that applied from 2021 through 2025 expired at the end of 2025, so the 400% limit is back for 2026. Enter your income and we estimate it for you.
Can you enroll me in a Marketplace plan too?
Yes. Our advisors write both Marketplace and private plans. One rule we follow: if a Marketplace plan would cost you under about $150 a month after your tax credit, we point you straight to HealthCare.gov (or your state marketplace) to enroll yourself. That is the best deal available, and nothing an advisor does would improve the price.
Can I keep my doctor?
Marketplace plans are mostly HMO and EPO networks tied to your area, with some PPOs. Private plans usually use PPO-style networks. After you unlock, every Marketplace plan shows its network type and links to the official summary of benefits, and your advisor can check specific doctors.
Who contacts me after I unlock?
One licensed health insurance advisor, by the channel you picked. Your information is never sold or shared with other agents. See the privacy policy and disclosures.
